Highlights of the year
There were many things that made 2016 a memorable year. In sports, the Chicago Cubs won the World Series on November 7th, becoming the first team from the Midwest to win the World Series. Those who loved the Cubs were thrilled, and their comeback win kept millions of fans on edge. Celebrities also made the news in 2016.
In politics, the year was marked by several significant events, including the infamous Paris attacks. Trump boasted of sexual impropriety in a video released by the Washington Post, and WikiLeaks released thousands of Hillary Clinton campaign emails. On a humanitarian level, the Eurovision Song Contest was held in Stockholm, Sweden. Ukrainian entrant Jamala wins the competition. In politics, Hillary Clinton becomes the Democratic candidate for President in the 2016 DNC and becomes the first woman to be nominated by a major political party. Annular solar eclipses also were visible in areas of Gabon, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Congo.
Terrorism was another notable event in 2016. A lone truck plowed through a crowd at a Christmas market in Berlin. Though the main suspect was arrested and released after the attack, Islamic State claimed responsibility. While most people are no longer surprised by terrorism attacks, they remain on high alert. In Melbourne, a terrorist attack was foiled on Christmas eve. In Brussels, 32 people died in a terrorist attack, which was linked to a terror cell that also committed the deadly Paris attacks.
There was a lot going on in the world in 2016. In 2016, Pope Francis and Patriarch Kirill met for the first time in over 1,000 years. The International Criminal Court was set up. US President Barack Obama and presidential candidate Donald Trump both criticized the country’s repressive laws. In other news, the world saw the release of the Panama Papers and a flurry of Trump victories. The Zika virus emerged as a major health threat and an outbreak of malaria.
World leaders were worried about the Rio Olympics. Brazil hosts the Olympics, despite a political crisis. US President Barack Obama visits Cuba for the first time since 1928. Meanwhile, Taiwan elects a new president, Tsai Ing-wen, who will continue to face close scrutiny from Beijing and the US. As a result, the country is under close scrutiny from US freedom of navigation patrols. All these events and others make 2016 a pivotal year.
